The series revolves around Tom (Paul Fusco) and Catherine (Susan Clark) Tanner, a suburban couple with three children: Brian (Justin Berfield), Julie (Molly Ringwald), and Lynn (Liz Sagal). Their ordinary lives change when a UFO crash-lands in their backyard, and they befriend the creature, Alf, who claims to be from the planet Melmac. Alf, with his sharp wit, sarcastic humor, and love for cats, quickly becomes a part of the family.
