La historia se desarrolla a fines de la década de 1960. Un pistolero profesional, conocido como "El Chacal" (interpretado por Omar Sharif), es contratado por un misterioso cliente para asesinar al presidente de Francia. A medida que se acerca el día del atentado, el gobierno francés y los servicios de inteligencia se esfuerzan por identificar y detener al asesino, mientras que paralelamente un ministro francés, que será el futuro presidente, se ve envuelto en un complot político.
