Inanna is a significant figure in ancient Sumerian mythology, known as the goddess of love, fertility, war, and the planet Venus. Her mythology is deeply rooted in the culture of ancient Sumer, which is part of modern-day Iraq. Inanna's character is complex, embodying both the nurturing aspects of love and fertility, as well as the destructive aspects of war. The Descent and Return of Inanna One of the most famous myths about Inanna is her descent to the Underworld, ruled by her sister Ereshkigal. In this myth, Inanna prepares herself for her journey by adorning herself with her seven divine powers (or "me"s), which give her her cultural and societal powers. However, she is stopped at the gates of the Underworld by Neti, the guardian, who demands that she remove one of her powers at each gate. By the time she reaches Ereshkigal, Inanna is stripped of all her powers and is naked.
