The film takes place in 1927, a year after the events of the first Fantastic Beasts film. Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) has just had his magical creatures and suitcase confiscated by the British Ministry of Magic. However, he soon receives a visit from Albus Dumbledore (played by Jude Law), who informs him that a dark wizard named Gellert Grindelwald (played by Johnny Depp) has escaped from prison and is planning to take over the wizarding world.
