Tamil romantic fiction has its roots in ancient Tamil literature, with works like the Sangam literature (300 BCE - 300 CE) and the Bhakti literature (6th - 12th centuries CE). However, the modern concept of romantic fiction in Tamil began to take shape in the 19th century with the advent of print media. The first Tamil novel, "Prathapa Mudaliar Charithram," was published in 1875 and marked the beginning of Tamil fiction.
