The group's history dates back to the early 2000s when eight women from different backgrounds and musical traditions came together to form Mashabwi Mamas. The name "Mashabwi" roughly translates to "my mother's friend" in Shona, reflecting the close bond between the members. United by their passion for music and their desire to promote Zimbabwean culture, they began performing at local events and festivals.
