Maxwell's music career began in the late 1980s, performing with his first band, Blac Leather, in Atlanta. He later moved to New York City, where he formed the R&B group Multi-Maxi. In 1990, Maxwell signed with Columbia Records and released his debut solo album, (1990). The album spawned the hit single "Pretty Wings," which reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
