The film follows the story of Sir Gawain (played by Dev Patel), a young and arrogant knight who accepts a challenge from a mysterious green knight (played by Ralph Ineson) at King Arthur's court. The green knight proposes a game: he will allow anyone to strike him with his axe, on the condition that the person must seek him out exactly a year later and receive a return blow. Gawain, eager to prove himself, accepts the challenge and beheads the green knight with a single swing. However, the green knight picks up his head and reminds Gawain of their agreement.
